   Walkersville Theatre Program

Being a participant in a Theatrical Production or activity provides specialized learning opportunities. It also allows students to fulfill their need to create, communicate, express and share with others. The lessons of cooperation and working as a team can make an impact not only in the students school life but in their future endeavors as well.

It is important to emphasize that the school wide Drama Productions, as well as, all Drama Club and Thespian Society activities are Extra Curricular, and there for are subject to the "Eligibility Policy" as outlined in the Student Handbook/Calendar. Although dedication to the productions and activities is the key to their success, dedication to the Academic and School Attendance requirements set by the State and Local Boards of Education must be your child’s top priority. Students active in all aspects of the Theatre Program are expected to maintain or improve their scholastic standing and keep good school attendance.

The procedure followed for the selection of the cast of any show is outlined in the Drama Casting Packet, which is made available to every student who wishes to audition. Due to the complexity of some shows, there may be roles that are pre-cast by the director prior to auditions. Students will be made aware of any such decisions before auditions take place. Adults who will be involved in working with the production and/or are educated in some aspect of dramatic productions will do the casting of roles. It is the policy of the Walkersville High School Drama Department that any, and every and all students wishing to take part in a school drama production may do so. They will receive a part regardless of talent or experience. It is also our policy that no student is guaranteed a specific role or type of role based on talent; experience or the number of years participated in our program.

Once production of a play or musical or an activity has begun, I ask for parental support in monitoring students’ academic work and school attendance. If a problem should arise, I ask to be notified immediately. I can and will monitor drama students’ school work and provide help they need to succeed academically and in their theatrical endeavors. Drama students will be required to have their teachers’ complete academic progress reports throughout production and activity periods.

Commitment to theatrical productions and activities means becoming a cooperative team member. To do this is not always easy. It requires dedication and sincere selfless devotion.

I welcome the opportunity to work with the student actors of Walkersville and commit myself to providing an enjoyable and valuable learning experience.

       Sincerely Yours,

       Michael J. Nazelrod
