INDIVIDUAL COACHING

An extra-extra-curricular opportunity for students seriously interested in further developing their practical skills as actors and performers. Individual-focused and goal-oriented, these coaching sessions are tailored to each student’s unique interests and desired outcomes. WHS Theatre Associate Director Grant Sorenson leads these workshop-style sessions in a one-on-one setting.

Sessions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, contingent on student and instructor availability. WHS Theatre sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible.

The development-driven nature of these coaching sessions necessitates that students have a serious interest in pursuing theater in the future at WHS or beyond, and are able to set and meet tangible goals in regards to their skills as performers. Coaching sessions will require extra time during the week for material preparation, memorization, etc. If you are unable to commit to this added workload, this opportunity may not be appropriate.

If you're interested in more information about coaching, please feel free to email Grant at grant.sorenson@wayzataschools.org.

"Working with Grant always results in growth. I have loved working with him because his work is always so specific, thorough, and meaningful. While coaching, Grant guides his students to find motivation and reason behind every single word of the text. Breaking down the text to discover the character's journey is also a large part of the coaching process when working with Grant. To start in one place and end in another. To find moments of discovery that propels the text forward. Through coaching, Grant gives all his students amazing skills and tools that continue to help us grow as actors in the future."
- Ingrid Schjolberg
, previous coaching student

"Coaching helped me develop a technique for dissecting monologues and future work and I grew a lot as a performer! I liked that it was after rehearsal/at the school because it made it really easy to fit in with my schedule and I got some great monologue options out of it!"
- Katy Manderfeld,
previous coaching student

"I found Grant’s coaching to be extremely helpful. It’s nice to have a few monologues that I am confident in for future auditions, and it was great to have the time to work one-on-one because there aren’t a lot of other opportunities for that."
- EJ Hanson
, previous coaching student

"Taking private lessons from Grant gave me a much stronger foundation in what and how to prepare for auditions. I also learned a lot about how to approach a character, and the different nuances of classical and contemporary styles. Thanks to Grant’s coaching I feel prepared and confident for auditions!"
- Cassandra Hultgren,
previous coaching student

Please note...
These individual coaching sessions are not to be taken as an alternative to WHS Theatre curriculum classes; rather these are meant to supplement the work done in class and build upon existing skills. To be considered eligible for coaching, a student must have completed Theatre I offered as part of the Wayzata theatre curriculum; completion of Theatre II is preferred but not required.

Specific audition material for WHS Theatre productions will not be prepared or worked on in these coaching sessions.
